Solar Power Illuminates a Bright Future for the Bachuma District Hospital

  • by

We are overjoyed to share this update about the successful completion of a collaborative effort to bring solar power to the Bachuma District Hospital, thanks to the unwavering support of the community, the Zonal Government, Suntransfer Tech, the Solar Energy Foundation, Water Engineers for the Americas and Africa and the Village Health Partnership. This project, which began with the dream of providing consistent electricity to the hospital’s operating room theatre, labor and delivery and neonatal intensive care unit, has become a shining reality.

The journey began in January, 2023, when the solar panels were manufactured in Germany. After an expedition that saw them arriving in Addis Ababa in mid-September, clearing customs in the fall, and reaching their destination of Bachuma in mid-January 2024, the panels were finally ready to be installed.

We stand proudly alongside the community as the solar system hums to life, bathing the operating room theatre, labor and delivery, and the neonatal intensive care unit in reliable, clean energy. This monumental achievement marks a turning point for expectant mothers in the Zone, as they can now receive emergency obstetric care including lifesaving cesarean sections regardless of the time of day or night.

The Bachuma District Hospital’s solar power system signifies a brighter future where mothers and newborns have a greater chance of survival and thriving. We celebrate this accomplishment with immense gratitude to all who played a part in making it possible.
