Village Health Partnership

At Village Health Partnership, we believe in a world where every mother has access to safe childbirth and every newborn receives the care they deserve. This belief drives our commitment to impactful healthcare initiatives globally. We want to share a compelling story from Siz Primary Hospital, where a critical need and incredible community spirit are converging on a life-saving solution: a solar power system.

The dedicated medical professionals at Siz Primary Hospital have faced immense challenges, particularly in providing emergency maternal and neonatal care. Without a reliable, uninterrupted power source, essential surgical services, including emergency C-sections, have been virtually impossible to perform safely. This forces mothers in labor to endure perilous journeys of over two hours to reach alternative facilities—a delay that, far too often, tragically results in loss of life.

The community of Siz has demonstrated extraordinary resolve, raising significant funds and acquiring vital operating room equipment. Their dedication underscores a profound desire for accessible care and a better future for the families in their community. However, this remarkable effort, and the lives it aims to save, hinges on one crucial element: consistent electricity. A solar power system is not just an upgrade; it is the indispensable foundation that will unlock safe surgery and critical newborn care for thousands.

We have been deeply moved by the leadership and passion of Terefe Keto, the CEO of Siz Primary Hospital, who vividly articulates the urgent need and the profound impact this project will have. The following correspondence highlights the dire circumstances, the community’s inspiring commitment, and the pivotal role a reliable power source plays in transforming healthcare at Siz. It is a testament to how, together, we can empower a healthier and safer future for mothers and newborns.

Subject: Urgent Appeal to Launch Solar Power Project: Final Step to Saving Mothers and Newborns at Siz Primary Hospital

Dear Village Health Partnership,

Warm and respectful greetings from all of us at Siz Primary Hospital.I write to you not only as the newly appointed CEO of this hospital, but as a voice for the mothers and babies whose lives are in danger every day due to a lack of accessible, life-saving care. From my very first day in this role, I have committed myself to advancing the vision you helped ignite:  the solar power installation that will transform maternal and neonatal health in our community. Your initiative is more than a project; it is a vital foundation for our hospital’s first-ever surgical services, especially emergency cesarean sections (CS).To save mothers and babies who currently must travel over two hours to access CS services; a delay that too often results in death; we mobilized the community. Through collective effort, we raised 5 million Ethiopian Birr and purchased an operating room table, surgical light, anesthesia machine, CS set, and other essential equipment. This was not just a financial milestone ;  it was a reflection of our people’s deep hunger for accessible care and their belief in a better future. But all this effort risks falling short unless we solve one urgent challenge: reliable electric power.Without uninterrupted electricity, no matter how skilled our staff or how well-equipped our operating room is, a mother could lose her life on the operating table. That is why your solar power project is not just important;  it is indispensable. It is the final key to unlocking safe surgery and newborn care for thousands of families who otherwise face tragedy. Thanks to your incredible generosity, 80% of the required $189,260 USD has already been secured. I personally reached out to zonal and regional officials to find support for the remaining 20%, but due to their current focus on national mega projects, they were unable to provide direct funding. Still, our resolve is strong. The Siz Town Administration has officially pledged 2,000,000 ETB, which will be available in July; a clear demonstration of local ownership.
We are deeply committed and ready to begin. I respectfully and sincerely request that you kindly consider moving forward with the implementation of the solar project. Your vision will save lives; and we are prepared to walk this final step with you.

With heartfelt appreciation and full commitment,
Terefe Keto, CEO, Siz Primary Hospital.
