The Evolution of Care in Rural Ethiopia
For years, the mission of Village Health Partnership (VHP) has been rooted in the fundamentals of survival: preventing obstetric fistula, providing clean water to clinics, and ensuring no woman has to labor alone at home.
We have seen the capacity of the health systems in the West Omo Zone grow significantly. As our WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) and solar infrastructure stabilize these facilities, the complexity of medical services we can support is increasing. We are moving beyond basic delivery into the next critical frontier: Neonatal Intensive Care.

The Emerging Challenge
Neonatal deaths have become a primary challenge in our target regions. While a successful delivery is a victory, a baby born at 32 weeks or one struggling with a treatable infection requires more than a standard maternity ward can offer. Without a dedicated NICU, these fragile lives are often lost to complications that are entirely manageable with the right equipment and trained providers.
Our Roadmap: The St. Paul’s Model
We aren’t starting from scratch. We are looking to the success of St. Paul’s Hospital as our model for rural neonatal excellence. Our vision is to implement specialized NICU services across four key locations:
- Mizan Tepi University Teaching Hospital (MTUTH)
- Maji District Hospital
- Bachuma District Hospital
- Siz District Hospital
Building Sustainability
Implementing a NICU is about more than just oxygen concentrators and incubators. It requires a sustained commitment to training and system guidance. We are working directly with medical providers to ensure these units are integrated into the existing hospital flow, creating a seamless transition from labor and delivery to neonatal care.

How You Can Help
As we returned from our 2025 trip, we were more committed than ever to seeing this mission fully realized. However, the implementation of more complex medical care requires a different level of investment.
Your donations today directly fund the specialized equipment and provider training that will populate these new NICUs. Together, we can ensure that “safer motherhood” includes a safe, healthy future for every child born in Southwestern Ethiopia.
